Overview
NVivo structures qualitative analysis: import transcripts, audio, and PDFs; code passages against a node hierarchy; then interrogate the coding with matrix and comparison queries. For large corpora and team projects, its query engine remains the benchmark.
Why researchers use it
- Query depth — matrix coding queries reveal patterns across cases and codes
- Any source type — audio, video, images, surveys, social media exports
- Team coding — merge coder work and compute inter-rater agreement (kappa)
Getting started
- Use institutional licensing — personal pricing is punitive.
- Start coding with a small, provisional codebook; let the hierarchy evolve.
- Learn matrix coding queries early — they are the analytic payoff for the coding labour.
The honest review
Strengths. Handles hundred-interview studies without flinching; the audit trail (codebooks, query results, memos) supports the methodological transparency qualitative journals increasingly demand.
Limitations. Expensive, heavyweight, and famously crash-prone with very large media files; projects lock you into the format; the Mac version trails Windows.
